Most dogs are harmless, but some exhibit aggressive behaviors. Even generally friendly dogs may bite when injured, scared, or provoked. Unfortunately, dog bites can be extremely serious and frequently result in severe injury, deep lacerations, nerve damage, and—in rare cases—fatalities.

In Alberta, dog bites fall under the Dangerous Dogs Act and the Occupiers’ Liability Act. For example, while it is perfectly legal for a dog to be off-leash on an owner’s private premises, you can still successfully sue if a dog attacks you while you are lawfully visiting that property.
